13. Card Flips
There are many conditions where a card can flip from its Prime (front) face to its Reverse (rear) face and vice versa. Those conditions include the card being destroyed or a keyword or ability that causes the card to flip. When a card does flip, the following is true:
- For Characters:
- Any Character Points on the Character are removed at flip. The controller then places a number of Character Points on the Character equal to their starting CP total.
- All other counters remain except Liberation counters.
- For Spacecraft:
- Any Characters or Ground Units remain deployed to the Spacecraft as long as the flip side can legally hold them. Any the new face cannot hold — for example, a Spacecraft flipping to a One-Seater Fighter — are displaced (§14.12); the controller chooses which cards stay. Earlier revisions destroyed the overflow Ground Units outright unless they had Escape Pod; they are now displaced like any other card.
- All counters remain except Liberation counters.
- For Locations:
- Any Characters or Ground Units that are deployed remain deployed there.
- All counters remain except Liberation counters.
- For all card types:
- Any attached Devices remain attached, and stay under the host's controller (§18.28).
- A Bound Character who flips stays Bound; the Storyline flips with them if the flip is a Fall (§8.10, §8.11).
A flipped card is its new face in every respect. The card uses all printed values on its current face, and it follows the rules of the type printed on that face — its Shielded status (§11.2), its destruction outcome (§11.6), its movement and deployment (§14), its icons, and its Lose-condition label (§16). The face a card came from governs nothing once it has turned.
This matters most where the two faces are different card types. A Contested face that is a Non-Capital Spacecraft is Unshielded, prints no shields icon, and is destroyed outright when it breaks — there is no third face to look for — even though the Prime face it came from was a Shielded Capital Ship.
